Since our establishment we have continued to monitor the Tobacco Industry in Botswana. The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) article 5.3 prohibits any partnerships with the tobacco industry and emphasizes the fundamental and irreconcilable conflict between the tobacco industry’s interests and public health policy. Partnerships identified in Botswana include;
- Ministry of Agriculture and Japan Tobacco Incorporate (JTI) partnership
- Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tobacco Institute of Southern Africa (TISA)
- British American Tobacco (BAT) Vehicle Donation to Botswana Police Service
- BAT Youth Smoking Prevention Campaign
What do we do as ATN?
Throughout the years in response to the above mentioned partnerships, we have petitioned the affected ministries, educated leaders to prioritize public health and lobbied for comprehensive tobacco control legislation.
